Explore D-Day History: Private Tour from Bayeux
Discover the heroic stories, solemn moments, and historic landmarks of D-Day with this private, fully guided tour departing from Bayeux or the surrounding area. This carefully crafted itinerary is designed for history enthusiasts and those seeking a deeper understanding of the Allied invasion of Normandy.
Tour Highlights
1. Pegasus Bridge
Your journey begins at the iconic Pegasus Bridge, where the first glider-borne troops of the British 6th Airborne Division landed in the early hours of D-Day. Hear the extraordinary story of their mission to secure this vital crossing, and see the original bridge preserved nearby at the Pegasus Memorial Museum.
2. Ranville War Cemetery
Visit Ranville War Cemetery, the final resting place of many soldiers from the 6th Airborne Division. This peaceful site honors their sacrifices and offers a moment of quiet reflection among the well-kept rows of headstones.
3. Monument La Flamme (Short Stop)
Pay tribute to two legendary figures of D-Day: Lord Lovat, the "godfather of British special forces," and Philippe Kieffer, the leader of the French commandos. Due to parking restrictions, this will be a brief yet meaningful stop to honor their contributions at this evocative monument.
4. Sword Beach & Bill Millin Monument
Walk the sands of Sword Beach, where British forces launched their assault on June 6, 1944. Nearby, visit the Bill Millin Monument, commemorating the courageous piper who played his bagpipes amidst the chaos of battle, boosting morale and symbolizing the indomitable spirit of the Allied troops.
Lunch Break
Enjoy lunch (at own expense) at your guide’s discretion, with options including the charming seaside town of Courseulles-sur-Mer. Savor fresh local seafood or classic French cuisine while soaking in the coastal atmosphere.
5. British Normandy Memorial
Stop at the British Normandy Memorial, a stunning tribute overlooking Gold Beach. This site honors the 22,442 men and women under British command who lost their lives during the Normandy campaign.
6. Gold Beach
Walk along Gold Beach, where the British forces overcame fierce German resistance to secure a critical stronghold. Learn about the pivotal role this beach played in the success of the D-Day invasion.
7. Arromanches & Mulberry Harbour
Visit Arromanches, a key location in the aftermath of D-Day. Explore the remnants of the Mulberry Harbour, an engineering marvel that enabled the Allies to supply troops and equipment. Your guide will recount the incredible ingenuity behind its construction and its role in the liberation of Europe.
8. Longues-sur-Mer German Battery
Conclude your tour at the German gun battery at Longues-sur-Mer. This remarkably well-preserved site offers insight into the formidable defenses the Allies faced and stunning views over the Normandy coastline.
