Pick up at your accommodation in Caen or the surrounding area
Today, we will come and pick you up at your accommodation located in Caen or in the surrounding area. Meet your English speaking driver/guide who will go over the itinerary and program of the day with you. Then, board your comfortable, air conditioned vehicle and begin your private full day tour to Mont Saint Michel from Caen, a Unesco World Heritage listed Site.
Completion of the abbey took hundreds of years
The first church was built on the mount in 709 at the request of Archangel Michael. A couple hundred years later, a small group of Benedictines settled there permanently and the church was enlarged. The first monastery was carved in the rock in the 11th century and gradually got bigger and bigger over the following centuries. In the medieval time, it quickly became an important destination for pilgrims, just like Santiago de Compostela in Spain.
The construction of the abbey as we know it nowadays was finished in the 13th and 14th centuries, and the grand chancel was replaced in the 15th century. Those hundreds of years of architectural prowess have left us with a magnificent monument, now referred as the “Wonder of the Western World”.

During your Mont St Michel day trip, you will start by traveling from Bayeux to the Mont Saint Michel, which you will access via a shuttle (scheduled departures) and the bridge in accordance with local requirements. While on the road, make sure to take it all in and observe the beauty of the Normandy landscape. Locally, the Mount has always been in the middle of a feud between Normandy and Brittany as to in which region the site belongs to.
Our Mont Saint Michel tour from Bayeux will then take you to the abbey itself, at the very top of the mount where the Benedictine Abbey is located. Follow your knowledgeable guide During this walking tour, the history of its construction will be explained in detail and while you are there, make sure to snap some pictures of the amazing views on the surrounding bay! This Mont Saint Michel private tour can take in small groups of 2 to 8 persons maximum. The tour takes place in a recent and fully equipped Mercedes minivan. A certified, English-speaking guide will be with you all day and ready to answer any questions you may have.

How difficult is it to reach Mont Saint Michel Abbey?
Mont Saint Michel as the name points out, is a mount and the Abbey is located at the top of the Mount! There are roughly 350 stairs that you will need to climb to reach the Abbey - around 200 stairs are in the village itself and the remaining 150 are within the Abbey. Therefore, if you have reduced mobility then the safer option is to stay in the village. This tour is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible. -
How long is the drive from Caen to Mont Saint Michel?
From Caen, to reach Mont Saint Michel, it will take just over one hour and a half. During the driving time, your guide will speak to you about the history and culture of the Normandy region. All our vehicles are equipped with a P/A system that allows our guides to safely make commentaries during driving time. The good thing is, everyone can hear no matter where you are seated. -
Will we have some free time for personal discovery of Mont Saint Michel?
Yes, after the morning guided visit of the Abbey, the rest of your time at the Mont Saint Michel is for you to enjoy. You can either stay a bit more at the top of the Mount or decide to make your way back down slowly. On your way, don't hesitate to take some of the smaller side streets that are less crowded and that can lead to some stunning views over the Bay. -
Is lunch included on this private day trip from Caen?
