Make your way to the Graves wine region
Leaving the bustling city of Bordeaux behind, we venture into the picturesque countryside, where the plains and rolling hills of the left bank wine producing area come alive. This region is the heart of Bordeaux's famous wine region, known for its prestigious vineyards carrying the esteemed Graves and Pessac Léognan AOC designations. Each winery in this area boasts distinct soil characteristics, reflecting its unique terroir and showcasing centuries of winemaking heritage.
Experience the magic of the original wine producing region of Bordeaux, where the Romans first planted grapevines nearly 2,000 years ago. The name "Graves" originates from the gravelly and stony soil found here, creating the ideal conditions for grape cultivation. Marvel at the vineyards that stretch as far as the eye can see, offering a captivating panorama of nature's beauty intertwined with rows of vines.
A highlight of this personalized tour is a visit to a local estate, carefully selected for its exceptional quality and winemaking traditions. Immerse yourself in the world of Bordeaux wines as you step into a Grand Cru Chateau, where you'll be warmly welcomed and guided through a captivating tour of the estate. Explore the vineyards, learn about the winemaking process, and witness the artistry behind producing these world-class wines. And, of course, delight your palate with a curated wine tasting experience, sampling a range of exquisite red and white wines that showcase the craftsmanship and dedication of the winemakers.
Throughout the tour, your knowledgeable Ophorus guide will be by your side, ready to answer any questions and share their passion for French and Bordeaux wines. Whether you're curious about the region's history, winemaking techniques, flavor profiles, or food and wine pairings, our guides are eager to provide insights and create a memorable and educational experience for you.
Discover the Pessac-Léognan wine region
As the journey continues, we invite you to discover the Pessac-Léognan wine producing area, a prestigious appellation that was once part of the Graves region. Recognized for its exceptional red and white wines, Pessac-Léognan earned its communal appellation in 1987. Let the rich aromas and flavors of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc, and Semillon grapes enchant your senses as you explore this remarkable wine-producing territory.
During your exploration of Pessac-Léognan, visit renowned wineries such as Chateau Haut-Brion, which holds the distinguished 1er Grand Cru Classé level of the 1855 classification, a testament to its exceptional quality and historical significance. Walk through the vineyards, marvel at the meticulously maintained grounds, and gain a deeper understanding of the winemaking process that has elevated these wines to international acclaim. Engage in delightful tastings, savoring the elegant nuances and refined character that define Pessac-Léognan's red and white wines.
Free time for lunch (at own expense) & Sauternes wine region
After a delightful lunch at a local restaurant, prepare to be enchanted by the enchanting Sauternes wine region, famous for its luscious and sought-after sweet white wines. The crown jewel of this appellation is Chateau d'Yquem, classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in the prestigious 1855 Bordeaux wine classification. Explore this legendary winery, as your guide unveils the secrets behind the production of these golden nectars.
Learn about the unique natural process that occurs in Sauternes, where a benevolent fungus called Botrytis Cinerea, also known as noble rot, imparts a distinctive sweetness and complexity to the grapes. Marvel at the vineyards enveloped in morning mist, followed by warm and dry afternoons that concentrate the sugar content and create the signature flavors of Sauternes wines. As you step into the winery, immerse yourself in the fascinating world of late harvest winemaking, where time and meticulous attention to detail result in wines of unparalleled richness and elegance.
Indulge your senses in a guided tasting of Sauternes wines, allowing the exquisite flavors of honey, blossom, and stone to transport you to a realm of pure delight. Learn from the experts about the art of food pairing, discovering the perfect culinary companions for these exceptional wines.
