Depart from Bordeaux and reach the left bank wine region
Take an exclusive, private Medoc half day wine tour for 2 persons and you’ll discover delicious red wines with cabernet sauvignon blends in the heart of this celebrated Bordeaux wine region. With Ophorus, experience is the most important factor when it comes to our personalized private sightseeing tours.
On your Medoc region wine tasting tour half day, you’re sure to discover hidden gems and taste prestigious wines in one of France’s most celebrated wine regions in an informal yet expertly guided way. This highly recommended wine tour from Bordeaux will introduce you to the Margaux & Haut Medoc appellations where some of the most famous chateaux are located.
Follow the Castle road, lined with prestigious wineries
As you reach the Medoc vineyards, we will take you to 2 carefully selected wine estates that are ranked as Grand Cru, classified growth Château or cru bourgeois estates. As you leave, reach the famous castle road along which many of the Grands Crus Classés wineries are located. At each winery, you will be introduced to the history and wine making facilities of the domains.
You will also have the opportunity to understand the wine making process. Then, your tour of the médoc region will continue with commented wine tastings in each winery. You’ll then get the chance to sample delicious cabernet sauvignon wines on this half day excursion that can be taken as a morning tour or an afternoon one.
With Ophorus, rest assured that your Medoc vineyard tour will be everything you imagined. All our drivers are fully accredited guides, meaning you’ll get double the expertise on this great Medoc tour. Every one of our expert guides holds at least the WSET level 2 certification in wines and spirits, and they take great pride in their region and craft.
You’ll learn how to judge a wine with all the senses, using your eyes, nose, tongue, and memory. These licensed guides are not only wine connoisseurs, they’re also authorities on the local area, ready to share a wealth of information about the stunning Bordeaux region.
Taste Delicious wines
Both the Margaux and Haut Medoc produce wonderfully perfumed french wines. Margaux wines have a distinctive fragrant taste, attributed to the high gravel content of the soil in these vineyards. The soil’s excellent drainage means the plants need to root down further to find moisture, making them particularly strong, and bringing up the flavors of the deeper earth. The Haut Medoc appellation is vast with almost 400 different wine producers operating there; the different wineries produce wine that have a wide variety of textures and flavors. If time permits, your guide will try and organise a stop at Chateau Margaux for photo opportunities.
The Médoc Wine Region: World renowned Wines & Wondrous Ocean Views
As well as producing some of the world’s most exquisite wines, the Médoc region also boasts over 60 miles of sandy beaches and is dotted with stunning castles. The Castle Route, running from the vibrant city of Bordeaux to the tip of the Médoc peninsula, is packed with breathtaking vistas and secluded fairytale classified growth Châteaux. Unlike Saint Emilion wines that are mainly composed of Merlot grapes, the Medoc wines are known for their high quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon in the final blending. The most famous region includes Margaux, Saint Julien, Pauillac and Saint Estephe.
Gentle hills, sand dunes, deep lagoons and sweeping Atlantic coastal views highlight a trip to another part of the Médoc region. The best way to see different things in the Medoc is to program a full day private tour that we will set up for you and that will allow you to experience the diverse flavors of the region in expert hands.
Flanking the town of Pauillac, some of France’s most acclaimed vineyards cover the eastern side of the Médoc peninsula. This area is home to many fabulous castles including Château Margaux, Château Latour and Château Mouton Rothschild. Another highlight of the region is the Gironde estuary. Formed from the convergence of the Garonne and Dordogne rivers, it is home to a monument that is known as the ‘Versailles’ of lighthouses.

FAQ
-
Do you organize pick up and return at accommodation for Bordeaux private tours?
Yes, absolutely. We will come and pick you up at your hotel, accommodation or AirBnB in Bordeaux. If your accommodation is not accessible by car (pedestrian zone in historical city center) then we will suggest the closest possible meeting point -
What type of vehicles are used during a private Bordeaux wine tour?
Our company uses only Mercedes Vito Tourer / Class V minivans that are recent, comfortable and fully equipped including individual A/C, shaded windows, large leg space and on board P/A system for commentaries by the guide. All guests can hear the commentaries wherever they are seated. -
Who conducts these Bordeaux Private Wine tours?
We only employ accredited and licensed tour guides that are also the drivers for all tours that need visits to be conducted by certified guides. Good examples are: the visit of museums, guided walking tours in cities, visit of historical monuments and so on. In some regions, where wine tours prevail (Bordeaux, Alsace) the tours are conducted by professional local guides, that are experts in Wines. Most of our Guides in Bordeaux hold the WSET level 2 in wines or are professional sommeliers. -
Is this private wine tour for 2 persons only available in English?
No, our talented, in-house multi lingual guides will be happy to conduct the tour in French, Spanish, German, Italian. Just ask for availability. -
Are the Winery Tours private?
During our private tours the visits at the wineries are most of the time private, especially if you book well in advance.
However, for some last minute bookings, it might be that you are being grouped with others, but in very low numbers. -
Can we choose which wineries we will visit during this Medoc private half day wine tour?
Yes, absolutely. If there are some wineries that you would like to include during your half day wine tour to the Medoc then reach out to our team of travel experts and they will take care of the rest.
Please note that on this half day tour it is only possible, for reasons of timing, to include wineries located in the Margaux or Haut Médoc appellations. If you would like to include wineries located in Saint Julien, Pauillac or Saint Estephe appellations then please book a full day tour. -
How many Bordeaux wines will I taste during this Private Médoc Wine tour?
Unlike other wine tasting sessions that you might have followed around the world, the tastings in Bordeaux are not as generous in terms of pours . The amount of wine tasted is not what many would expect but here it is all about elegance, fruit, quality, aromas and flavors rather than quantity.
Each Chateau will have you taste their premium wine and what we call the 'second' wine of the estate. Sometimes, Chateau owners also add a tasting of some other wine if they happen to be the owners of another Chateau in Bordeaux. So basically, at each winery visited it will be 2 to maximum 4 wines tasted.
If you wish to taste more wine, lunch in Pauillac is a perfect location to sample other appellations - it is easy to order wines by the glass. To further enhance your wine experience, it is always possible to buy some bottles at the wineries visited. Bordeaux has also a very large number of wine bars where you can enjoy a further tasting experience. Ask your guide for great recommendations. -
Is it possible to visit a Barrel making facility on your Wine Tours from Bordeaux?
No, it is not possible to visit a Barrel making factory near Bordeaux.
