Get an insight into the Normandy D-DAY History
A full day Trip from Paris, this Normandy small group tour will take you to the Normandy coastal battlefield grounds of world war II. On June 6, 1944, the allied troops landed on the Normandy beaches, marking the beginning of a fierce and deadly battle that would culminate in the liberation of France a few months later.
Among the allied troops, the Americans landed on two different beaches, later named Omaha and Utah while other allied soldiers landed on Juno Beach, Sword beach and Gold Beach. Today, our Normandy shared day tour is taking you along Normandy landing beaches. Your drive will have you see some essential sites such as Arromanches with its remains of the artificial harbor and Longues sur Mer where a German Battery still stands and that played a strategic role during the landings.
ARRIVE AT POINTE DU HOC
Then, you will be taken to the Pointe du Hoc site a breathtaking cliff offering lunar landscapes and a magnificent viewpoint over the English Channel. Located between Utah & Omaha beaches, this prominent position along the coast of Normandy, was a focal point of the amphibious assault by U.S. forces during the early morning hours of D-Day, 6 June 1944. Here, Lt. Col. James E. Rudder, commanding the 2nd Ranger Battalion, received the mission to land at 6:30 a.m., scale the 100 foot cliffs, and disable the German positions. Lt. Col. Max F. Schneider’s 5th Ranger Battalion would follow and reinforce them. The battle was rough, as the Point du Hoc had been built as a key point of the Atlantic Wall by the Germans – it was the highest point between Utah beach and Omaha beach and provided a great observation spot to notice any unfriendly arrivals from the sea.
NORMANDY AMERICAN CEMETERY
Continue your tour with a stop at the Normandy American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer. Located on the site of the temporary American St. Laurent Cemetery, it was established by the U.S. First Army on June 8, 1944 as the first American cemetery on European soil in World War II. Here you will have some free time to walk around and pay homage but also visit the Visitor Center that provides a fuller array of visitor services to put the D-Day landings in perspective as one of the greatest military achievements in history.
At the end of your day you will be given free time to explore the Caen Peace Memorial, a place for contemplating war in general and why it is important not to forget the legacy of the Second World War.
