It was in Strasbourg in 1570 that the very first edition of the oldest Christmas market in Europe took place, then called the “Christkindelsmärik” (market of the Infant Jesus). Since this time, Strasbourg has continued the tradition of a traditional, authentic, warm and generous Alsatian Christmas. Colmar, However, Strasbourg is not the only town to host Christmas Markets. The arrival of the little wooden huts in the town squares of Alsace’s towns and villages is also a major event.
In the morning, we will come and pick you up at your centrally located accommodation in Strasbourg. Meet your English speaking driver guide who will go over the program and itinerary of this full day private tour. Then board your air conditioned vehicle and begin your sightseeing tour of the Alsace Christmas Markets of the Alsace region.
Make your way to Colmar’s Historic Christmas Market
The Christmas markets mark the return of time-honored festivities and Alsace is without a doubt a winter wonderland. A world of delicious fragrances, delightful craft goods and lights quickly takes shape along the rows, where some surprising and mouthwatering discoveries await the markets’ visitors. This morning depart from Strasbourg and head towards Colmar. Christmas in Colmar’s Historical town center means a historic setting made magical by amazing Christmas illuminations that blend perfectly with the wonderful lighting designed to enhance the town’s heritage.
The pedestrian city center with its major architectural treasures that stretch from the Middle Ages to the 19th century is decorated like in a dream, a veritable open-air theater where the warm Christmas mood envelops the heart of the town. Here, follow your guide for a walking tour of the town and to discover one or several Christmas Markets as the town holds 5 different markets. After the walk, enjoy some free time to explore in the different markets and why not taste the local mulled wine?
Afternoon in the Christmas Markets of the Alsace Villages
Then, depart along the famous Alsace Wine Route to pass through some of the most beautiful villages of Alsace. The afternoon program will depend on the date of your tour. Eguisheim, Riquewihr (Medieval market), Colmar and Strasbourg cities host a market every single day. On the 6th, 7th and 8th of December, your stop will certainly include the Christmas Market of Bergheim, on the 7th, 8th, 14th and 15th of December you will have the opportunity to discover Ribeauvillé market, and almost every single day of this festive season, the market of Kaysersberg will be ready to show you all it has to offer. After the visits return to Strasbourg.
