Chenonceau, Amboise & Clos Lucé Visits Including Lunch

On this small group Loire Valley day tour,  we will come pick you up in either Amboise or Tours. Meet your English speaking tour guide who will go over the itinerary and program of the day. The tour includes a guided tour of the Chateaux of Chenonceau, Amboise and Clos Lucé, entrance tickets are also included.

Guided Tour of the Chateau of Chenonceau

After a quick drive, your day will begin at the Chateau de Chenonceau. This castle is one of the most famous of the loire valley chateaux, notably thanks to its two story gallery standing over the Loire river. The first castle was built in 1513 by Catherine Briçonnet, a lady coming from a local family operating in finance at the time, on the ruins of a mill. After her death, the French administration discovered financial frauds carried out by her husband and decided to seize the castle, which thus became property of the crown.

François Ier, who was king at the time, left the castle to decay for the rest of his reign

However, his son, Henri II, gifted the Château de Chenonceau to his mistress Diane de Poitiers. She would be the driving force behind the creation of the gardens. After Henri II’s death, her rival Catherine de Medici took the castle back and started a long process of renovations and embellishments. The castle and its Renaissance gardens are extremely well preserved and are the perfect place to learn more about France during the Renaissance times.

After this interesting visit, our day tour through the Loire Valley will give you a break with a well deserved wine tasting lunch with a wine specialist who will explain all about the beverage you are about to try. The wine tasting session will take you to old traditional cellars and will let you sample some of the best wines in the Loire Valley region, such as Vouvray, Chinon and Montlouis. As the Loire Valley wines pair really well with local cheeses, you can expect to see them on the menu as well.

In the afternoon, you will head to the Royal Castle of Amboise, where the young future François Ier grew up alongside his mother and sister

The castle is also where the grave of Leonardo Da Vinci’s is located, in the castle’s chapel. During your visit, you will see the chapel, the castle and the gardens. Your guide will explain all the details you should know about the history of this place!

Finally, our Loire Valley tour will take you to Leonardo Da Vinci’s residence during the last three years of his life, the Chateau of the Clos Lucé Manor

There, you will be able to see how the master used to live and get a glimpse of his invention room where he could express his genius. Leonardo Da Vinci spent the last three years of his life here. As a really close friend of several Renaissance French kings, this is why he chose to have a residence so close to them.

At the end of the tour, your driver will drop you off at the same location you were picked up from in the morning, either in Tours or Amboise and that will be the end of our services.
